Scripture Journal Tip: Topic Blitz

I wasn’t sure what to call this… so I called it a blitz… and all out attack on a topic.

I like to do this before I give a talk.

It is a great way to get a lot of information about a single topic.  Then, after the “blitz”,  I can sift through everything and choose what I want to focus on.

I will write a topic in the middle or top of a page, and then I just look up a bunch of scriptures on that topic and record what I learn about it.  I also may write down quotes, personal insights and my own experiences if it applies.

At this point, I may dive more deeply into certain scriptures and write how I feel and what I think about certain verses.

It is after I do this that I:

1-  Feel like I am doing my part in studying and gaining what I should from the scriptures

2- Feel like I am prepared to teach

3- Feel like I have shown my gratitude for what I am learning.  Writing down what I have learned really does that!  If I don’t write it down, I know I am going to forget, and therefore –  know that I am not really valuing or being grateful for the truths I am gaining.

I have fallen short of 1,2 and 3 so many times.  But EVERY time I pay the price to learn – I always am grateful I did and am in awe of the beauty of the doctrines and of the ways those doctrines can impact our every day lives.

  1. Wow, thank you so much for sharing your WONDERFUL talents! I have felt so inspired and motivated to be a better wife, scripture studier, and future mother! I’m jealous of your seminary students!

Look forward to learning more from you!

  2. Thanks for sharing this. I had a HUGE learning moment with this… This last weekend we had stake conference and we had the privilege of having Elder D. Todd speak both sessions. The first one was amazing. We had awesome speakers that really complemented each other. I totally spaced taking a journal or even a pen to scribble down some notes/insights on the hymn copy handout. He spoke on different topics and I gathered 3 things he encouraged us to do. Needless to say, I forgot 2 of the 3 and still can’t remember them. I definitely learned my lesson and didn’t leave the following day for the Sunday session without grabbing a journal. So frustrating, but oh well! 🙂

Thanks again for sharing this. It was awesome!

    1. thank you for sharing that! I keep a section in my journal for notes just like that – and those notes have been some of my most valuable. Find the talk by Elder Eyring called “Listen Together” he has a GREAT story about this. In fact here it is.

I am curious about what the color coding is for, I’m sorry if you’ve explained that-maybe just point me in the right direction? I haven’t seen any explanation in my reading of your site yet, and I’d love to understand more. Thanks!
