DIY Wedding Centerpieces- The Red Headed Hostess

I am absolutely in love with the centerpieces from my brother’s wedding!

I just loved how they turned out!!

I have made many centerpieces for many weddings… and I think this one tops my list of favorites.

I have a couple of rules of thumb for centerpieces:

1-  They should never block the view of the person across from you

2-  They should be memorable

And this time around, I added a new rule

3-  They should have a second life

My goal with this arrangement was to have them have a longer life than the 3 hours at the reception, so I designed them to be something you could put into your home after – all you need to do is take out the fresh flowers and replace them with something more permanent… like river rocks, or moss, or pine cones.

So here is how we made them:

First we found a pot we liked.  My mom found these at Tai Pan.

Then we stained some dowels and mixed together some plaster and set the dowel in the pot.

The tin foil was our attempt at holding the dowel straight while the plaster dried – it worked pretty good and we felt like MacGyver.

We did this step a couple of weeks before the wedding.

Then we got some moss balls (also from Tai Pan) and set them on the tops of the dowels.  We used two different kinds for variety.

Then a couple of days before the wedding I made the arrangements.  I got floral foam, soaked it in water, and then cut them to fit into the pots.

And then I started arranging. If you don’t feel comfortable arranging, choosing one flower (like a rose) would be easier.

I used spray roses, statice (the purple stuff), billy balls (the yellow balls), green button mums, white daisies, green hyperacum berries, mini green hydrangeas, pink asters, and some fillers.

My brother’s fiance (now wife), is a super happy person, and she wanted her flowers to be bright.

That is my little sister.

So bright they were.  We just love her and I think it is really fun that she can have these in her home for years to come to remind her of her wedding day.
