Here is a devotional/lesson idea for your family that will help your children learn to be “all in” as disciples of Jesus Christ.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
Section 4 in the Doctrine and Covenants is a popular section, and it is often called the missionary section, but did you know that it was not given as a “missionary” message?⁠⠀
⁠⠀
It was given to Joseph Smith Sr. when he desired to know how he could assist in the Lord’s work, and Joseph then received the revelation in section 4. Father Smith was not being called on a mission - he was being called to the work.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
So this section applies to every calling and responsibility a disciple of Christ has in his or her lifetime. ⁠⠀
⁠⠀
Nursery leader… quorum president… class secretary… gospel doctrine… ministering assignment… neighbor… community member… friend… all of it. ⁠⠀
⁠⠀
Father Smith was a farmer, so he would have understood the analogy of the field being white and ready to harvest. When grain is ready to harvest it becomes pale, or is often called “white.” The Lord was teaching that it was time for disciples to get to work.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
Father Smith would have understood what it means to thrust in your sickle with all of your might. It is hard, hard work. Backs would hurt, blisters would form, and the heat would beat down. But that is what the Lord was asking his disciples to give all they have.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
D&C 4:1 says, “Therefore, O ye that embark in the service of God, see that ye serve him with all your heart, might, mind and strength….”⁠⠀
⁠⠀
The word embark means to go aboard a vessel. You cannot go halfway on a vessel - you have to be all in. That is what the Lord is teaching Father Smith in this section. Come all in - give all you have. Don’t come half way in, and give a half-hearted effort. Give ALL of your heart, might, and strength.⁠⠀

The “Roll the water bottle” family game is really fun and will invite discussion about what it looks like in your life to thrust in your sickle with all of your might in your responsibilities as disciples of Christ.⁠⠀

If someone asked me to come up with one word to describe Joseph Smith, it would be:⁠⠀
⁠⠀
Unstoppable. ⁠⠀
⁠⠀
A man named Joseph Knight Sr. (who owned a gristmill) once said that Joseph was the hardest worker he had ever hired. Imagine that! From a man who hired many, many workers - Joseph stood out as the one who worked the hardest.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
That says a lot. ⁠⠀
⁠⠀
Following the first vision at age 14, persecution was poured upon him. But he endured.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
We will learn over the next few weeks the the translation process was not easy - it took work. When Oliver was given the gift to translate, he was not successful because of the study and faith required (see D&C 9 next week). But Joseph could and Joseph did - in fact the Lord counseled Joseph not to run faster than he had strength (see D&C 10:4).⁠⠀
⁠⠀
This is one reason the story of the lost manuscript is so important. Joseph was completely committed, but he was not perfect and we will watch his growth through this experience. ⁠⠀
⁠⠀
This story teaches us about reverencing and trusting God over the persuasions of men.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
This story teaches us how we can unintentionally be furthering Satan's work (like Martin) and to stand guard so that will not happen.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
This story teaches us to trust in the Lord even if we do not fully understand. ⁠⠀
⁠⠀
And then when we get to section 10 in a couple of weeks - we will stand in awe at the omniscience and foreknowledge that God has. It will be a testament of why we should fully trust in Him, even when things seem bleak - or especially when things seem bleak. ⁠⠀
