This first picture is a scissor skills activity where they can practice cutting and setting up Emma and Joseph's home (this will be fun for older ages too).⁠⠀

Here are 3 ideas to help you teach your family about personal revelation this week. I have used the first two ideas many times in seminary, young women, EFY talks, etc. I hope these will help you too.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
ONE: *SALT*⁠⠀
⁠⠀
Give your family a little bit of salt on each of their tongues and ask them to explain what it tastes like (this is a hard thing to explain). As they struggle to explain what salt tastes like, then ask them to explain to you what the Holy Ghost feels like.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
They will find that both are hard to explain! If someone has felt the Holy Ghost before, they may understand their explanations, but otherwise, they may find that it is hard to express.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
Now read to them President Boyd K. Packer’s experience on the airplane in his talk, “Candle of the Lord” (January 1983 Ensign). This will open up a great conversation!⁠⠀

TWO: *RADIO*⁠⠀
⁠⠀
Show a radio with a dial. Let them try to tune into a station without any static at all. ⁠⠀
⁠⠀
Talk about how learning to listen to voice of the Spirit takes effort, time, and experience to get a clear signal. As they grow, they will become better and better at it. ⁠⠀
⁠⠀
President Boyd K. Packer taught this:⁠⠀

“You can learn now, in your youth, to be led by the Holy Ghost.⁠⠀
“As an Apostle I listen now to the same inspiration, coming from the same source, in the same way, that I listened to as a boy. The signal is much clearer now” (October 1979 General Conference).⁠⠀

THREE: *“GROW INTO THE PRINCIPLE OF REVELATION” (By President Nelson)⁠⠀

This amazing article by President Nelson is in this month’s (January 2021) Liahona. Here is how my family used this talk (this idea is great for ages 6 or 7 and up) :⁠⠀

- I printed multiple copies, and we took turns reading the sections.⁠⠀
- After each section was paused and discussed. ⁠⠀
⁠⠀
We loved this experience! I know it made a difference because I have seen my daughter spend longer in her prayers and pause after to “listen.”⁠⠀

When I was teaching seminary, I received this question over and over again every single year: “How can I recognize when the Holy Ghost speaks to me?”⁠⠀
⁠⠀
Another time I was in a meeting with the administrator over all seminaries and institutes, and he was talking about a specific question on a test that we all gave to our seminary students. The question asked something like, “Do you recognize the voice of the spirit in your life?” The administrator reported that the answers were lower than other similar questions that reflected the faith of the student. As an experiment they changed the question and asked something like, “Do you believe the Holy Ghost can communicate with individuals?” and he reported that the answers shot up to reflect that YES! They believed that the Holy Ghost can communicate with us. So the students believed that the Holy Ghost can communicate, but they did not feel like they had learned to recognize His voice in their own lives. ⁠⠀
⁠⠀
So I really, really love President Nelson’s constant invitation to learn how to “Hear Him.” If I were still teaching seminary, that would be plastered all over my room, on their folders, bookmarks — everywhere! ⁠⠀
⁠⠀
This week our families will be introduced to Oliver Cowdery, and we will get to watch the Lord tutor Oliver in the gift of revelation. Revelation was new to him, so the Lord taught Oliver things he needed to know. These are priceless sections. As the Lord tutors Oliver, our families will also be tutored. ⁠⠀
⁠⠀
Just two years ago, President Nelson said this:⁠⠀
⁠⠀
“Our Savior and Redeemer, Jesus Christ, will perform some of His mightiest works between now and when He comes again. …But in coming days, it will not be possible to survive spiritually without the guiding, directing, comforting, and constant influence of the Holy Ghost” (April 2018 General Conference).⁠⠀
