Must Read Talk: One Thing Needful | The Red Headed Hostess

One Thing Needful

This talk, “One Thing Needful,” by Sister Patricia Holland (Elder Holland’s wife), and it was the center of my Relief Society lesson this past Sunday and boy oh boy was it good!

I don’t think I know a woman who doesn’t need to hear this talk.  There are some FANTASTIC principles taught and there were some particular paragraphs that hit home to me big time.

May you enjoy it as much as I have… and will.

I have reformatted it so it is numbered so you can refer to paragraphs easily.

In fact, this may be my next scripture journal study

Here ya go:  Patricia Holland One Needful Thing

  1. I’m about halfway through, but just had to come back and say thank you! This is tying together a lot of thoughts, impressions and bits of this and that from around which all together is bringing peace to my soul. One question: I’m wondering the date and context of this talk. Thanks!

  2. What an excellent article!!! I reposted it on FB and sent it to a couple special women–I loved how she used the annalogy of the boxes and how to use them. This hits some issues that I’ve been dealing with lately and feeling very alone about. It helps to know that I’m not alone and that it’s ok and there are ways to get through it with a loving Father in Heaven and Savior. Thank you for sharing this.

  3. I Googled, and this is from the Ensign, October 1987.
Love Patricia Holland. And her husband is a favorite as well!

  4. I am wondering if you would share some of the things you focused on for your RS lesson on this amazing and powerful article. Did you ever turn it into a study guide? I am teaching next month and would love anything else you would share.

  5. I read this talk when it was first published in the Ensign and was so impressed that I copied it and have used it many times in both teaching and counseling. Thank you for making it available in such a lovely format!!

  6. I was wondering if you had a study guide for this or any helps when you taught your RS lesson? I’m teaching soon and I love this talk. Any help is much appreciated!
