I'm sharing something so close to my heart today - I'm sharing something so close to my heart today - getting children into the scriptures.

Wherever possible, give your child their own set of scriptures as young as possible (much younger than eight). If your budget is tight, look for lightly used sets or try printing off some of the scripture pages for them to read.

Let your children mark them in their own special way, even if it looks a mess and you have to bite your tongue! They need to find personal connection and joy in the scriptures at every age.

And above all, help them to know that scripture language is difficult and it takes a lot of practice. Many children, teens and adults feel bad or guilty when they have a hard time understanding the scriptures. Help them know that it is supposed to be a process, but that the treasures they will find in there will bless them beyond measure.

And now I'm curious, how old were your children when you gave them their own scriptures?

It can be a struggle to help children truly focus It can be a struggle to help children truly focus on Christ during the sacrament.

In your activity kit this week, you will find this little booklet to help children remember Jesus during the sacrament. With beautiful artwork and a simple retelling of the last days of Christ's life, it is perfect to use during the sacrament.

Have each child make their own booklet and bring it to Church with them. This makes a great primary activity too, or maybe your Young Women would enjoy making one for the children in your ward.

Who do you know that helps make the world more of Who do you know that helps make the world more of what it ought to be? Today could be a good day to thank them for their light.

“Refuse to accept the world for what it appears to be. Shine the brightness of your hope on it and make it what it ought to be.”

As they eat their last meal together before Jesus As they eat their last meal together before Jesus suffers in the garden and on the cross, the Savior institutes the sacrament.

He teaches them to love one another and shows them how to truly serve.

As I studied these chapters I couldn't help but imagine the anxiety and dread that must have been hanging over the Savior. He knew what He was about to do. And yet as always, His focus was on others.

The Joseph Smith Translation of the Parable of the The Joseph Smith Translation of the Parable of the Ten Virgins, teaches us that this is a parable not about the world, but about members of the Church.

These are people who are expecting and waiting for Christ, but not all are as prepared as they should be.

The Lord categorizes the virgins into two groups. Notice that He doesn’t label them as good and bad, righteous and wicked, or loved and unloved. Five are foolish and five are wise.

Like the bridegroom in this parable, we do not know the exact timing of Christ's coming, so we might fall for the temptation to become casual in our discipleship.

The foolish but well-intentioned virgins were too late—the door was shut. They begged that the door be opened so they could enjoy the feast with the bridegroom.

The JST of Matthew 25:12 changes the bridegroom’s response from “I know you not” to “You know me not.” The requirement is not whether Christ knows and loves us but rather if we have done the spiritual work to come to know and love Him.

“The foolish virgins were not averse to buying oil. They knew they should have oil. They merely procrastinated, not knowing when the bridegroom would come.

”In the parable, oil can be purchased at the market. In our lives the oil of preparedness is accumulated drop by drop in righteous living. Attendance at sacrament meetings adds oil to our lamps, drop by drop over the years. Fasting, family prayer, home teaching, control of bodily appetites, preaching the gospel, studying the scriptures—each act of dedication and obedience is a drop added to our store."

-President Spencer W. Kimball

This week we will study some of the signs of the S This week we will study some of the signs of the Second Coming. Help to warm up your children before you teach by trying a simple object lesson.

Tape up some 'signs' all over your house in advance of the lesson. Here are some ideas:

-A stop sign
-Dark clouds (a sign of a storm)
-A tree full of Fall leaves (a sign that winter is coming)

As your children see all these pictures and ask why they are taped up around the house, tell them that they all have something in common.

When it is time to teach, explain that they all alert you that something is coming, and some help warn you to be on the lookout and to be prepared (like for a storm). Explain that Jesus gave us “signs” to recognize when He would come again and that these signs are important to know.

A great activity to follow this would be the family scripture activity in the weekly kit called 'Signs of the Second Coming'.

Tag a friend who would be glad of this easy teaching tip!

Do your children like crafts? This week we will st Do your children like crafts? This week we will study the parable of the ten virgins and there are two really fun crafts in the weekly kit to help them love and remember this story.

1. You can print out this paper oil lamp and follow the instructions to make it into an oil lamp. This would make a great activity for a primary lesson or activity too.

2. Try taking things a step further using oven-bake clay and a candle wick. Once you have hardened it in the oven and added some olive oil, it really works!

How special would it be to make the clay oil lamp then turn off the lights and talk about this story in the glow of the candle light?

Have you ever felt 'alone' with God? “C. S. Le Have you ever felt 'alone' with God?

“C. S. Lewis put it this way: ‘[God] has infinite attention to spare for each one of us. He does not have to deal with us in the mass. You are as much alone with Him as if you were the only being He had ever created. When Christ died, He died for you individually just as much as if you had been the only man [or woman] in the world’."

Come and see what we'll be learning about next wee Come and see what we'll be learning about next week!

The parable of the talents reminds me of the talk Elder Uchtdorf gave at General Conference, where He counseled us to to pray to see our children's spiritual gifts. Next week would be a great time to talk and pray about these things as we study this parable.

There are two oil lamp crafts to choose from next week - one using paper where you will just need a short piece of twine or string, double-sided tape and colored paper or tulle to make flames. The other is a clay lamp that really works! You will need oven bake clay, a candle wick, olive oil and a toothpick. It's easy and fun!

These activities and so many more are ready for you to download now!

School will be out for many of us in a matter of d School will be out for many of us in a matter of days! I'm always ready for a change of pace but there are things I miss about a routine too.

One of the things I have to be really conscious of over the summer is making sure I make time for personal study. I'd love to hear what you do to make this happen even with all the kids home.

Have any of these worked for you?
- Getting up earlier to have a few minutes alone
- Going on a walk and listening to the scriptures
- Having a study routine where you and your children study at the same time

I'd love to know what you have tried! Share in the comments so we can all learn.

The illustrated stories are definitely one of the The illustrated stories are definitely one of the most loved parts of the kit. But did you know there are lots of ways to use them beyond a bedtime story?

Here are three you might not have thought of:

1. Cut out the pictures and lay them out on a table. Tell the story and have the children place the pictures in order as you tell the story.

2. Cut out each picture with the caption. Put pictures in order and staple together to create a little book.

3. Have the children look at the pictures and use Play Doh to create each scene in the story.

You guys always have the best ideas - what other ways have you used the stories?

Frustrations and obstacles are completely normal!

One thing I would say is that we are playing the long game – keep your eye on the ultimate goal. There will be ups and downs, but don’t take your eye off of building your children’s spiritual foundation. We are in the last days; we can’t take our focus off of that.

How have you overcome or moved past obstacles and frustrations?

“The work of a mother is hard, too often unheralded work. Please know that it is worth it then, now, and forever. ... May I say to mothers collectively, in the name of the Lord, you are magnificent. You are doing terrifically well. The very fact that you have been given such a responsibility is everlasting evidence of the trust your Father in Heaven has in you."
