How Can Studying the Scriptures Help Me Learn about Heavenly Father?

Study, teaching ideas, and printables for the topic "How Can Studying the Scriptures Help Me Learn about Heavenly Father"?

I am REALLY enjoying this new scripture study method of studying the Come Follow Me lessons from this adult study guide.  And THANK YOU for all of you who have emailed me or left comments expressing the same thing.  I am so happy to know that these books are helping you!  I love being able to flip back and forth between the pages and reference other lessons and what I have learned from them.  I also REALLY love how these topics are on my mind throughout the day and have found that they are helping me in my journey to become a more holy woman.

Using the Come Follow Me Curriculum is a great study guide for anyone!  You do not need to be currently teaching the youth at church (I’m not) and you don’t need to have this study guide – the guide is just made to make it convenient for you, but you could just use the curriculum lessons HERE and keep your notes in a notebook or journal.  These lessons truly make awesome study material.  As I have studied, I have noticed I have had the recurring thought that if the majority of the membership of the church studied like this (such pointed topical study), faith would inevitably increase and we would become a more Zion-like people.  I have thought this because I have noticed changes in my life, and I have received numerous emails from you expressing the same sentiment.  It really is no surprise because that is what doctrine does – it changes our behavior.  It is just nice to experience it.

OK, so for the lesson, How Can Studying the Scriptures Help Me Learn about Heavenly Father?  This was a pretty quick study, yet packed with important information.  The basics of this lesson was: 1- the importance of scripture so we can know about God, and the consequences if we don’t have them; and 2- Who Heavenly Father is and what He is like.

How can studying the scriptures help me learn about Heavenly Father study and teaching ideas

There are some things I learned that I will use forever more when teaching about Heavenly Father and seeking to know Him better myself.  The way this particular study page for this lesson is organized is “Heavenly Father” is written right in the center of the page and so as you look up the suggested scriptures and references you keep adding what you learn about Heavenly Father.  I found this to be really enlightening and powerful to see all of the qualities in one place.  In fact, this is exactly what I would do if I were teaching about Him to a class or my family.  If you have small children you could have them draw pictures or find objects that represent the different attributes you find.  You could even do that over a series of weeks and keep reviewing what they have already learned.

Also, as mentioned in this other article about a similar topic, I have a collection of amazing quotes that I think everyone should read and would be really great for this particular lesson.  Here is a PDF with these on them.  These are formatted to fit easily into your study guides.  You will see that they are in columns – so if you are printing this off just for yourself you can cut it in half and discard one of the halves.

There is only one suggested talk in this lesson.  And it is excellent.  Elder Christofferson teaches about William Tyndale, which I made CERTAIN to teach about every single year in seminary.  I had an entire lesson about him and others like him.

Here is a pamphlet form of this talk.  To see how to put a pamphlet into your journal, see this article.

And finally, here is our print-your-own teaching package for this lesson and all of January Sunday School Lessons HERE:

  1. I don’t mean to complain, especially since I truly appreciate all the work you put into these lessons, but the link for the pamphlet goes to the teaching packet. These lessons are all so wonderful and really impact my life. I am grateful for all your hard work.

    1. Oh, thank you Krista! I forgot to attach the pamphlet. oops! That is what I get for writing the article at 5:30 in the morning! 🙂

      Have a great day!

  2. Thank you so much for helping us Sunday School teachers! Your packets are exceptional and allow us to teach the principles outlined and suggested in Come Follow Me but with a little extra ‘something’ that elevates the teaching/learning process. Many many thanks!

  3. Yes, Shannon, please add me to the list of satisfied customers. I gave the Adult Youth Study Guide as gifts for Christmas. My granddaughter is really enjoying the more animated participation in her Sunday School Class and we talk about what she is writing in her study guide.

    1. Hi Christina! Yes! The study journals (or the chapters and topic kits in the downloads) are totally customizable and can fit with whatever you are studying. Many of the topic packets (in the download section) are specific to some LDS doctrine – but we plan (soon in the future) to create some different categories for LDS studies and general Christian studies.

      Does this help?

      Shannon 🙂
