Have you ever noticed how different a scripture fe

Have you ever noticed how different a scripture feels when you understand the context behind it?
One of the best examples is Doctrine and Covenants 115:5:
“Arise and shine forth, that thy light may be a standard for the nations.”

We often quote that like it’s a feel-good, motivational verse.

But when the Lord said those words, the Saints weren’t basking in peace—they were losing everything.

They had just fled Kirtland, leaving their temple behind.
They had already been driven from Independence, the place they thought Zion would be.

Their finances were collapsing. Trusted friends had turned on Joseph Smith.

And right in the middle of it all, when everything felt uncertain, the Lord said:

“Arise and shine forth.”

That’s not a call to shine when things are good.
It’s an invitation to shine when life is hard.
To keep building Zion when your world feels unsettled.
To arise when it would be easier to give up.
The Saints didn’t wait for peace or prosperity.
They started laying plans for another temple.
They kept gathering.
They kept believing.
They built Zion right in the middle of their storm.

✨ This week, write a note in your scriptures next to D&C 115:5:
“This was said in hard times.”
Then, talk as a family about your own Far West moments—the seasons when you’re trying to rebuild, start over, or just keep going.

How can you still arise and shine forth right there?
Because Zion isn’t built when life is perfect.
It’s built in the messy middle—
in homes where faith flickers but doesn’t go out,
and in hearts that choose to shine anyway.
