New Project #2- The Red Headed Hostess

Tons of great church stories

Thank you for your input on new project #1

And now I would like your input for a much bigger project!

The depth of this is one is kind of overwhelming to me, but I know what a great resource it would be for you as well as myself as I study and teach my family.

My goal is to create a TOPIC treasure chest for you.  So a place where you can search by topic and find great stories, teaching ideas (for different ages), journaling suggestions, quotes, etc.

I am still working through exactly how to make this work, but I think I could do this pretty quickly and start rolling out a topic per week or so, and then as I do, you can leave comments with additional suggestions and ideas, so you are part of the treasure chest too!

So this is what I am looking from you…

I am looking for some great stories.  Mainly from General Conference or BYU Devotionals.  I am pretty good at finding quotes and teaching ideas (at least to get a good start on each topic) – but there are SO many great stories out there – and I know how impactful they are.  Truly, I always try to include a few stories in my Gospel Doctrine lessons because they are such powerful teachers.

So… please share stories that you have heard that have stuck with you (and if possible link to it in your comment).

Thank you!!

  1. Just a few of our favorites:

Our kids love President Monson’s story about the maka feke:

They also love Elder Arnold’s talk about the cows – this is an often repeated quote in talks and lessons: “We are free to choose but that we are not free to choose the consequences of our actions.”

President Packer’s parable of the pearl:

What a great resource this will be! Thank you!

  2. I was teaching a Gospel Doctrine Class and came across this story! I can’t find a link to the talk so here is a copy and paste of it from my class notes. This one is about following the prophet and it makes me tear up every time I read it! It always makes me feel that we shouldn’t take hearing the prophet speak for granted!

In a talk entitled “Remembered and Nourished by the Good Word of God,” given at BYU on September 26, 1976, Elder Jeffrey Holland told the story of a visit by President Kimball to Tonga for an area conference.

The conference was to be held in Nuku’alofa, Tonga. The island of Vivau was 1- 1/2 hours away by plane; 24 hours away by boat. But only one boat was available for the Saints of Vivau to travel to Nuku’alofa to hear the prophet speak. The boat was designed to hold 150 people.

“If you stuffed bodies into every possible corner of the ship, you could get close to three hundred people,” Elder Holland said. Well, what happened? How important was it for these people to hear what the prophet had to say when he was in the neighbor-hood? “

Eight hundred Tongans jammed onto that boat and stood up for twenty-four hours without sleep, without food, without drink, without anything–because they knew that a prophet of God was going to be in their islands and they were not going to miss him for anything in the world.
There were members jumping off the dock trying to swim to the boat after it departed, so anxious were they to hear the prophet speak.”

  3. I love your blog and finding it was a huge turning point in my life. I found another site that I think would be a great resource for your new project. It is a site someone has been working on for a stake Book of Mormon class.with scripture study quotes and stories. There are more quotes than stories. It was started Jan 2012 and they have gradually been adding every chapter of the Book of Mormon. I think they are up to Alma 47 that they added the end of April. So they are still working on it! They take each verse or combine a few verses together, and have quotes or stories relating to those verses. It is great how they have it organized. They have all their sources posted at the end of each quote. It is awesome! So if you had Book of Mormon scriptures in mind for your topic, the quotes and stories are all there to go along. It is called BOM Handouts. bomhandouts.wordpress.com
    Hope it helps!

  4. I’ve only had a chance to read a few of the chapters in the above mentioned site, but the there are 4 great stories in the listings for Alma 15.
