Quotes about the Holy Ghost

Here are some of my favorite quotes about the Holy Ghost that are really thought-provoking and great to have on hand:

(The last one is one of my all-time favorite quotes)

The Gift of the Holy Ghost

“Baptism by water leads to the authorized opportunity for the constant companionship of the third member of the Godhead.”  (Elder David A. Bednar, Ensign, May 2006, 28)

“Women… who can hear the voice of the Lord, and who respond to those promptings, become invaluable instruments in His hands. …  Never doubt that your influence is absolutely vital to preserving the family and to assisting with the growth and spiritual vitality of the church.”  (Elder M. Russell Ballard, Ensign, April 2002, 72)

“Repentance takes care of the past, faith the future, and the Holy Ghost helps us with today.”  (Elder Neal A. Maxwell, Heart, p.30)

The Holy Ghost and the Atonement

“If you have felt the influence of the Holy Ghost during this day, or even this evening, you may take it as evidence that the Atonement is working in your life. For that reason and many others, you would do well to put yourself in places and in tasks that invite the promptings of the Holy Ghost. …The reception of the Holy Ghost cleanses us through the Atonement of Jesus Christ.” (President Henry B. Eyring, CES Fireside for Young Adults, September 10, 2006, Brigham Young University).

Impressions from the Holy Ghost:

“Impressions on the soul that come from the Holy Ghost are far more significant than a vision.  When spirit speaks to spirit, the imprint upon the soul is far more difficult to erase.  Every member of this church should have impressions that Jesus is the Son of God indelibly pictured on his soul through the witness of the Holy Ghost.”  (President Joseph Fielding Smith, Improvement Era, November 1966, 979)

“As we gain experience with the Holy Ghost, we learn that the intensity with which we feel the Spirit’s influence is not always the same.  Strong dramatic spiritual impressions do not come to us frequently.  Even as we strive to be faithful and obedient, there simply are times when the direction, assurance, and peace of the Spirit are not readily recognizable in their lives.  In fact, the Book of Mormon describes faithful Lamanites who ‘were baptized with fire and with the Holy Ghost, and they knew it not.'”  (Elder David A. Bednar, “That We May Always Have His Spirit to Be with Us, Ensign, May 2006)

“Write down impressions or thoughts that you feel came from God….  Thing carefully about whether the truth you received requires action.  It is by obedience to commandments that we qualify for further revelation of ruth and light.”  (President Henry B. Eyring, Ensign, July 2001, 13)

Receiving Personal Revelation

“When you seek inspiration to help make decisions, the Lord will give gentle promptings that require you to think, to exercise faith, to work, to struggle at times, then to act.  It is a step-wise process to finally reach an inspired conclusion.  It is unlikely that the whole answer will come all at once.  The Lord’s pattern allows you to grow.”  (Elder Richard G. Scott, Making the Right Choices, CES Fireside, January 13, 2002)

“Put difficult questions in the back of your minds and go about your lives.  Ponder and pray quietly and persistently about them.  The answer may not come as a lightning bolt.  It may come as a little inspiration here and a little there, ‘line upon line, precept upon precept’ (D&C 98:12).  Some answers will come from reading the scriptures, some from hearing speakers.  And occasionally, when it is important, some will come by very direct and powerful inspiration.”  (President Boyd K. Packer, Ensign, November 1979, 21)

“Only with revelation can we do the Lord’s work according to His will in His way and according to His timing.”  (Elder Neal A. Maxwell, “Revelation”, Worldwide Leadership Training Meeting, January 2003, 5)

Promptings/Warnings

“The promptings that come to us to flee evil reflect our Heavenly Father’s understanding of our particular weaknesses and his awareness of the unforeseen circumstances of our lives.  When these promptings come, they will not generally stop us in our tracks, for the Spirit of God does not speak with a voice of thunder.  The voice will be as soft as a whisper, coming as a thought to our minds or a feeling in our hearts.  By heeding its gentle promptings, we will be protected from the destructive consequences of sin.

“But if we ignore those promptings, the light of the Spirit will fade.  Our agency will be limited or lost, and we will lose the confidence and ability to act.  We will be ‘walking in [spiritual] darkness at noon-day’.  Then how easy it is to wander into strange paths and become lost.”  (Elder Robert D. Hales, Ensign, May 2006, 7)

“The gift of the Holy Ghost, if you consent, will guide and protect you and even correct your actions. It is a spiritual voice that comes into the mind as a thought or a feeling put into your heart….It is not expected that you go through life without making mistakes, but you will not make a major mistake without first being warned by the promptings of the Spirit. This promise applies to all members of the Church.”  (President Boyd K. Packer,  Counsel to Youth, General Conference, October 2011)

Stirs The Soul

“Some do not own up even to the small spiritual stirrings within them….  When in the later Judgment there is access to the seismographs of the soul, I predict there will be some very interesting recordings that can be introduced as evidence.  Agrippa had such a moment.  Probably Pilate also.  We are often in the presence of a good and powerful person, or truth.  Sometimes it is not until later that we remember our hearts burned within us, but the record will so show.”  (Elder Neal A. Maxwell, Deposition, p.18)

  1. I so appreciate your efforts on my behalf, Shannon. Your work is filling in some of the gaps in my work. Is there a way to print off this group of quotes, as in a pdf, for example? I’d like to print a bunch, cut them apart, pile them on the table and offer them to the young women for use in their journals. Glue sticks all around, ladies!

    1. Hi Laurie! I am so happy to help you fill in gaps! 🙂
I hesitate to make a PDF because then it makes it hard for me to add quotes onto the post as I find them. I wanted to gather several more for this post, but I decided to hurry and put it up so that you could have access to them. But, keep checking and maybe there will be more.
But let me tell you how to do it!!! Just copy the quotes by clicking at the first quote and then dragging your mouse all of the way to the bottom and then right click on the highlighted text “copy”. Then open a new Word doc and right click on that and click “paste”. And then you can format it as you like as well as omit or add any quotes you would like to add to your lesson.
      I hope this helps!
      Shannon

  2. Thank you for all your great helps!!! I have been following you for a few years now and got my husband excited as well with your “personal and spouse study..” guides of the basic doctrines. He felt is was “neutral” ground for both of us to study together instead of a “hey, look what I know” form of study. Will you be sending out any more? We really loved them and learned alot TOGETHER, and have continued to add to them in our journals!!!! Your vision is working for us, and of course we tell everyone we know about your site. Thank you again.

  3. Here’s a quote that our Gospel Doctrine teacher shared on Sunday.

“The spirit of God speaking to the spirit of man has power to impart truth with greater effect and understanding than the truth can be imparted by personal contact even with heavenly beings. Through the Holy Ghost, the truth is woven into the very fibre and sinews of the body so that it cannot be forgotten.” ~Joseph Fielding Smith, Doctrines of Salvation

  4. I love this one:
“We hear the words of the Lord most often by a feeling. If we are humble and sensitive, the Lord will prompt us through our feelings. That is why spiritual promptings move us on occasion to great joy, sometimes to tears. Many times my emotions have been made tender and my feelings very sensitive when touched by the Spirit.

The Holy Ghost causes our feelings to be more tender. We feel more charitable and compassionate with each other. We are more calm in our relationships. We have a greater capacity to love each other. People want to be around us because our very countenances radiate the influence of the Spirit. We are more godly in our character. As a result, we become increasingly more sensitive to the promptings of the Holy Ghost and thus able to comprehend spiritual things more clearly.” (Ezra Taft Benson Ensign Apr 1988, Seek the Spirit of the Lord)

  5. “Like learning a foreign language, it takes practice and effort. Please know, though, that you can learn the language of the Spirit, and when you do, it will give you great faith and power in righteousness.” (The privilege of prayer, J. Devn Cornish Of the Seventy

  6. Shannon,

Under “Impressions from the Holy Ghost”

I think you may have a typo in Eyring’s quote, currently it says:

“Write down impressions or thoughts that you feel came from God…. Thing carefully about whether the truth you received requires action.”

I believe that “thing” should be ‘think”

Love the quotes and I am loving my scripture journals!! Thank you!
