Calling everyone with a messy house! And yes I am

Calling everyone with a messy house! And yes I am 100% in that camp!

I think we're all guilty of carefully selecting or editing what we share on Instagram - it's the equivalent of the frantic clean up we do in the 15 minutes before someone comes over to our house.

But real life isn't always pretty and styled. In fact, most of the time it's messy, wild, and even a little broken.

If we learned one thing in our study of Adam and Eve, it's that God knew that we needed opposition in order to learn and grow. We need the messy and the broken to discover how Christ can clean things and fix things.

Our hope at Red Headed Hostess is that we can be part of the solution for you on the messy days. That you can quickly reach for beautiful art with videos, discussion questions and stories to bring the scriptures to life and the Spirit into your home.

This year my team and I wanted to overcome two major challenges that we all face in learning the gospel, and especially in teaching children the gospel.

We wanted to reduce the feelings of overwhelm that can so often creep in, and above all we wanted to get these scripture stories deep into our children's hearts.

After much research and study, we designed the weekly kits around three key areas of learning that have been proven to be most effective in having children (and adults!) remember what they have learned.

1. The first area or phase of learning is what we call "Learning the Story." This is the overview or initial 'sketch' that children might make in their minds. Tools like the illustrated stories, draw it scripture story activities and overview pages are designed for this stage.

2. Phase two is "Digging Deeper" and is designed to get your children building the picture more fully in their minds. What would it really have been like for Noah to find wood for a 500 foot long boat? How would it have felt when people made fun of him? Notebooking, marking guides and the table posters all fit into this stage.

3. The final area of learning is all about having fun. Games, word searches, crafts, are all built into the kits each week for this crucial part of teaching.

Every week you can take just a few minutes to glance at the contents page and choose one activity from each area. That way you know your children are getting both variety and well-rounded study.

One thing you will love that we have added to the

One thing you will love that we have added to the kits this year is the "More Ideas" pages. Every week you will have lists of extra ideas with object lessons that will bring so much variety to your family study and really keep your kids engaged.

The thinking behind it is to keep things simple for you to prepare, yet effective in teaching gospel principles. Some of the ideas need literally zero supplies, some of them are simple crafts that use things you already have around the house like play-doh, paper bags, a mirror, or crayons.

This week one of the ideas is to make a paper chain of Adam's posterity and use the story from President Hinckley to talk about being a strong link in your family chain. Perhaps that will lead to a beautiful discussion about your own family tree. Or you could try using a cup of dirt to see what that has to do with Enoch being called as a prophet.

Maybe you'll combine a couple of the ideas, or adapt one, or do none of them because it sparked a better idea in your own mind. Our hope is that these 'extra' ideas truly make your planning easier and bring joy and tender teaching moments in your home.

I will never forget the day that I received the phone call that I was hired to become a seminary teacher.

It was in a January and most hires happened in the spring, so I was not expecting it at all. I was shocked.

I had been doing “opt teaching” which is like student teaching, but I had 101 reasons I wasn’t going to get hired full time.

But then I did.

And I almost said, “Are you sure you called the right person?” In fact, I might have said that. It was all a blur.

Then the next week me and my 101 reasons were suddenly in my own classroom with my own 150 students.

And I began to learn about God’s grace more than I had ever experienced before. I brought all of my inexperience and the Lord strengthened me.

This week my children and your children will learn about Enoch and they will learn how he responded to the Lord’s call to preach the gospel. Enoch’s response feels so familiar to me - he had his own version of “are you sure you called the right person?” But his words were, “Why is it that I have found favor in thy sight, and am but a lad, and all the people hate me; for I am slow of speech; wherefore am I thy servant?” (Moses 6:31).

I need my children to read that. I want them to see the Enoch before and the Enoch after - because the next week they will see the Enoch that caused the earth to tremble, the mountains to flee, and the rivers to turn from their course. And they will see the Zion that Enoch built.

I don’t know what the Lord has in mind for my children, but in these last days, I don’t imagine they will be small things.

So as the Lord calls them to do things that they may feel are too hard for them, they can remember Enoch and learn that trusting in the Lord will change their lives.
