Did you know that the Cardston Alberta Temple was the first to be built outside of the United States?

Symbolism from this Art Piece: Flowers and trees represent Light and Life. The temple is where we go to be endowed with power and receive light and truth.

Mountains are symbolic of being immovable, sure and strong. It is also symbolic of us getting closer to Heaven. We go to temples to become stronger and get closer to the Lord.

The magnificent temple being on a hill gives you a greater perspective, so you can see across the valley. In the same way, the temple gives us a greater perspective. It helps us understand who we are, and what we need to do to see the face of God.

The light shining from the clouds is symbolic of the Lord’s presence and power. The temple is His holy house and there we receive of His power.

Other symbolism IN the Cardston Alberta Temple:

There are downward and upward facing triangles in the Cardston temple. These beautiful carvings symbolize that as we move closer to God, He in turn is getting closer to us (just like what we learned last week with the word ‘succor’ - He is forever coming toward us too!)

The downward triangles are the blessings we receive from Heaven, and the triangles pointing upwards are our prayers to Heaven and the blessings we can give to those in Heaven while on Earth (proxy work in temple, as well as blessings)

Years ago Anthony Sweat @brotheranthonysweat wrote an article on my site about what it means that the "power of godliness" is manifest through temples.

Here are some things he taught:

One of the special blessings of my life is that I have full access to all my wife’s gifts and abilities and resources—her knowledge, wisdom, talents, strength, goodness, and just down-right cute-ness. Why am I so fortunate to have all of Cindy Sweat’s resources at my fingertips? Well, because I married her. I gave my life to her, she gave her life to me, and we became one—The SWEATS (Man, what a name. Love ya, forefathers). It’s the marriage ordinance that connects me to her and her to me and gives us full access to what each other can offer the other.

Now, why I am I telling you this about marriage? Let me explain with a verse from the Doctrine and Covenants: “Therefore, in the ordinances thereof, the power of godliness is manifest.” In other words, gospel ordinances give us access to God’s power in our lives and help us become more like Him. Just like how a person gains full access to their spouse’s gifts, abilities, and powers through the ordinance of matrimony, we gain access to God’s gifts, abilities, and powers through the ordinances of the gospel.

The following is a list of the saving ordinances of the gospel and some of the “power of godliness” we potentially receive from each ordinance:

ORDINANCE POWER OF GODLINESS
Baptism (sacrament) The purity or cleanliness of God (see Moroni 6:4)

Holy Ghost The will of God—his mind and heart (see D&C 8:2-3, 68:4, 97:1)

Priesthood The authority and power of God (see D&C 121:36)

Temple endowment The knowledge of God (see D&C 95:8, 105:11)

Temple sealing The eternal increase of God (see D&C 131:1-4, D&C 132:21-22)

Next week we get to focus on a single section: D&C 84. This section provides a perfect opportunity to teach our families about the temple and the importance of temple ordinances.

At this point in the Doctrine and Covenants, the Saints did not yet have a temple, and the Lord was preparing them for what was coming. These same teachings can prepare your children for the temple in their future.

Notice the art this week that our artist Heidi Carter created to help you teach your families about D&C 84:19-21. Of this piece of art, she explained:

"In this art piece, I had the opportunity to paint my childhood temple in Cardston, Alberta, Canada. Being from the prairies of Southern Alberta, everything was flat with beautiful fields of yellow canola flowers. Driving to the temple, the distant mountain range, with Old Chief prominently aligned with the temple, came clearer into view. The magnificent temple was on a hill - beckoning to all of the power we can receive inside. Storm clouds parted to pour radiating light onto the temple - a place of peace, strength, power, and where I align my thoughts and life to an eternal perspective. Temples are a solace from the world."

Isn't that beautiful? You can show this art to your children and discuss questions like:

- What do you see in this art?
- What does this piece of art capture about the temple?
- What details do you notice?
- What is symbolic about the temple being on a hill?
- What can the canola flowers, life, and light around the temple symbolize?
- What can the light shining upon the temple symbolize?

Then you can share this quote by President Nelson:

"The temple is the object of every activity, every lesson, every progressive step in the Church. ... Ordinances of the temple are absolutely crucial. We cannot return to God's glory without them."
