Joseph had every reason to stay angry. His brothers betrayed him, sold him, and left him behind for years. But when he finally stood in front of them again, Joseph made a different choice.

Forgiveness.

This week’s lesson has such a powerful moment of change in Joseph’s family, and this simple object lesson helps kids feel what that kind of forgiveness looks like.

Using a backpack and a few heavy items, kids see how holding on to hurt can feel heavy and how forgiveness through Jesus Christ can lift that weight.

This week we study Genesis 42–50 and the powerful conclusion of Joseph’s story: his reunion with and forgiveness of the brothers who once sold him into Egypt.

We see Joseph’s willingness to forgive his brothers, a powerful example of Christlike forgiveness and the healing that comes through the Savior.

Elder Neil L. Andersen taught:

“The powerful compassion of the Savior in forgiving sin and in healing the wounds caused by the sins of others is a most miraculous manifestation of the love of God.”

Joseph’s response to his brothers reflects this same compassion.

In Genesis 45:4–5 we read:

“And Joseph said unto his brethren, Come near to me, I pray you… I am Joseph your brother, whom ye sold into Egypt.

Now therefore be not grieved, nor angry with yourselves… for God did send me before you to preserve life.”

Instead of holding onto pain, Joseph chooses mercy, trusting that God had been working through even the hardest parts of his story.

Sometimes the hardest part of teaching the gospel to teens is simply starting the conversation.
