This week's lesson takes us into the beginning of This week's lesson takes us into the beginning of Israel's monarchy and the stories of Saul and David.

When Israel asked for a king, Saul seemed like the obvious choice. He was tall, capable, and looked exactly how the people imagined a king should look. At first, Saul led well. But when Samuel instructed him to wait at Gilgal, Saul found himself under intense pressure. His army was scattering, Samuel had not arrived, and Saul panicked. Instead of waiting for the prophet who held the priesthood authority, Saul offered the sacrifice himself.

That moment revealed a pattern that would continue throughout Saul's life. Rather than fully trusting the Lord, he increasingly chose his own way.

Eventually, the Lord instructed Samuel to anoint a new king. Samuel was reluctant because he cared about Saul, but he obeyed. When Samuel arrived at Jesse's house, every older son seemed like a better candidate than David. In fact, David wasn't even invited to the gathering. He was still out tending sheep when Samuel asked if there were any other sons.

But while everyone else was looking at outward appearance, the Lord was looking at the heart.

David wasn't chosen because he looked like a king. He was chosen because his heart was turned toward God.

This clip is from this week's Weekly Video inside the RHH Lifted Membership, where each week, I help moms put the scripture story on their heart and give you the tools to bring the gospel into your homes and families in beautiful and natural ways. Everything is there and ready for you right at your fingertips to help you build a Christ-centered home. 🤍

📖 Come, Follow Me | Week 24
1 Samuel 8–10; 13; 15–16

#ComeFollowMe2026 #OldTestament #1Samuel #Saul #David #ScriptureStudy #RedHeadedHostess
Israel wanted a king because they wanted to be lik Israel wanted a king because they wanted to be like the nations around them. They wanted someone to lead their battles and make them feel secure.

And at first, Saul seemed like the perfect choice.

He was tall, capable, and chosen to lead. But as fear and pressure grew, Saul started listening more to the voices around him than the voice of the Lord. He justified partial obedience, blamed others for his decisions, and relied on his own understanding instead of trusting the Lord completely.

At one point, Samuel reminds Saul that he was once “little in [his] own sight.” Humble enough to rely on God. Humble enough to listen.

Later, the Lord tells Samuel, “Man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7)

While people were looking for someone impressive outwardly, the Lord was looking for something deeper.

📖 Come, Follow Me | Week 24
1 Samuel 8–10; 13; 15–16

One of the hardest parts of Come, Follow Me is fee One of the hardest parts of Come, Follow Me is feeling like you've fallen too far behind to start again. But scripture study was never meant to become a pressure spiral. Sometimes coming back simply starts with understanding the heart of the story each week. 🤍

That's why we built the Lifted Membership the way we did. Many moms start with the Lifted App where they watch the Weekly Video while their children jump into Story Time and other scripture resources designed just for them. Everything is created to help you quickly understand what's happening in the scriptures and find simple ways to bring the gospel into everyday life.

When you become a Lifted Member, you'll have access to the Lifted App and every Come, Follow Me week we've studied so far this year, including months of scripture stories, activities, study tools, and resources your family can revisit anytime. In fact, because we're already well into the year, summer is actually a wonderful time to begin. There's no pressure to catch up, but if you want to, everything is waiting for you.
